Object manipulation: screws & bolts


For enterprise training in industrial settings it’s common to use VR training to show employees how to assemble or disassemble an object or machine as part of a manufacturing, maintenance or repair scenario.

One of the specific interactions that often needs to be simulated is that of tightening or loosening screws and bolts. How is this normally shown in a VR simulation? Let’s take a look…


Tightening screws using power tools


Using a wrench


Turning a handle to adjust a bolt. Note that the controller remains visible at all times, so that the user knows where their hands are at all times. A further enhancement would be to replace the controller with a visualisation of the hands.


Turning a bolt using hands

Using a screwdriver and other hand held tools. Note that in these examples the controller disappears and the user can only see the tool.
