Immersive Training patterns

Next step in FOV prompts

Description

In some training applications it may be beneficial to show the next step instruction somewhere clearly visible in the user’s Field of View (FoV). This can perform at least 2 different functions:

  1. Hand holding: Guide the user through the process step-by-step. This is useful early on in training when the user is learning what to do and is not expected to remember the correct sequence of actions yet.
  2. Goal setting: The instruction prompt can serve as a persistent reminder about the overall goal of the task, but refrain from helping the user to figure out the specific actions they need to perform next.

Examples

These prompts are very visible and appear in the central part of the FoV. They disappear or change once the action is perfromed.

This action prompt is attached to the right controller and is only visible when the controllers are in view

This prompt appears at the bottom and indicates the goal, but does not give any clues on where to go or how to do it.

The next examples show very granular step by step prompts combined with arrow overlays that teach the user exactly what they need to do for each step
