An important feature in all training and learning scenarios is to test the user’s knowledge and information retention during and after training. This can be incorporated into the VR training, although it is not essential. Many training courses focus the VR experience on simulating a task and run the assessment via traditional offline methods.
Some advantages of having the assessment within the VR environment include:
- The assessment can be interactive
- The assessment can happen in context of the training scenario, either during or right after a simulation
- The dynamic and interactive nature of VR, means that user can see immediate feedback
- Less burden on the trainer to review and mark paper responses/ exams
- No need for the user to switch modalities, such as moving to a PC workstation to do a digital assessment, so less equipment required for training
- The user can try again immediately
- Automatic collection of data about the effectiveness of the VR training
Interactive Quiz: An interactive panel appears with questions to test the user’s knowledge. This can immediately provide feedback and marries up theoretical knowledge with practical hands on simulation.
In this example the UI does not immediately reveal if they got the answer right or wrong. The feedback comes at the end, which is more of an assessment phase model.
In this example the quiz appears on a handheld virtual tablet device, adding familiarity to the interaction.
Hazard identification assessment: The user uses the gaze cursor to look around and identify potential hazards in the environment. This is not really a test, but they must find all of them to complete the simulated report. Each time they identify one correctly the checklist updates with a new entry.
Post test metrics: This panel shows the training assessment results and KPIs to the user at the end of the scenario so they can see how they’ve done. The training teams can also immediately access these stats to understand (and prove) the level of training achieved, and if additional training is needed.
